YOUNG ADULTHOOD (19 – 39 years of age):
This age group has a large range and includes people who are just entering university and people who are already occupied in jobs and business. This stage is a vital transition from a teenager to an adult and the responsibilities of the person greatly change. This is also a stage where the person lives in a completely new family and also creates new relationships.
TYPES OF PHYSICAL ACTIVITY:
The types of physical activity which a young adult may participate in may include attending gyms where moderate intensity is performed. By adulthood, people in this age group participate in a greater range of physical activity forms. They have the capability to go running, jogging, cycling, or attending competitive sports. Especially since young adults have the access to personal transport such as car, they are more likely to participate in a broader range of physical activity. Exercise is the most commonly performed physical activity opposed to competitive sports. This type of physical activity focusses on muscle and bone strengthening, and flexibility.
INFLUENCES ON PARTICIPATION:
By early adulthood, there is a likely chance that people will engage in relationships and possibly even families. The new responsibilities such as caring for the family or attending workplaces may either encourage or discourage physical activity. Earning a wage also means that adults have the easy expenditure to pay for equipment and facilities. Peer groups from workplaces may also influence participation in physical activity. Leaving school also means that people would need to join clubs if they wish to continue playing sport. Some of the influences or factors which may affect physical participation include:
- Work or career
- Household duties with new family
- Raising children in their family which may either encourage or discourage physical activity
- Motivation to participate in sport which may decrease due to other things in mind.
- Lack of time due to other daily activities
- Health and fitness which may have deteriorated over time
BARRIERS OR FACTORS THAT AFFECT PARTICIPATION:
Once reaching adulthood, numerous of different thoughts begin to enter their minds. They are focussed on other aspects in life such as work or family. Therefore, it is possible that their participation in physical activity may decrease. As ageing also takes affect on adults, disabilities or health conditions may also affect physical activity participation levels. Lack of time and other responsibilities in a young adult’s life may also prevent physical activity.
